How I Took Control of My Hormones – My Journey to Balance

Hi, I’m Kasia. For years, I struggled with hormonal ups and downs—irregular cycles, mood swings, fatigue, and symptoms that doctors either dismissed or treated with a quick prescription. Like many women, I was told that birth control, restrictive diets, and stress-inducing workouts were the answers. Spoiler: they weren’t.

It took me years of trial and error, deep research, and a complete mindset shift to finally regain balance. Today, I’m sharing my journey—not as a perfect formula, but as real-life lessons that helped me take control of my health. If you’re struggling with hormonal chaos, know that it’s not all in your head, and your body isn’t broken. Let’s talk about what truly made a difference for me.

My Journey: From Hormonal Imbalances to Feeling Like Myself Again

For years, I struggled with hormonal chaos—endometriosis, PCOS, ovarian cysts, irregular cycles, hair loss, extreme PMS—you name it, I had it. My body felt like it was in constant survival mode, running on fumes, and trying to keep up. No amount of traditional advice seemed to help.

Fast forward to today: I feel balanced, energetic, and deeply connected to my body. I’ve given birth to a beautiful baby boy, I trust my body’s signals, and I no longer feel like I’m constantly fighting against myself. But let me tell you—getting here was not a quick fix.

Regulating hormones is not just about popping supplements or following trendy diets. It’s a deep, transformative process that requires you to listen to your body, give it what it truly needs, and let go of outdated beliefs that keep you stuck.

Here are the six most important changes that helped me balance my hormones naturally

1. Switching from Plant-Based to Animal-Based Nutrition: The Turning Point in My Hormonal Healing

At my worst, I was eating an extremely restrictive plant-based diet. I wholeheartedly believed that avoiding animal products was the healthiest choice for my hormones. It was the message I had heard everywhere—on social media, in dietetics courses, in mainstream health advice. I was convinced that a perfectly balanced vegan diet was the ultimate answer to hormonal balance, gut health, and overall well-being.

But in reality? My body was completely depleted. I struggled with:

❌ Chronic fatigue—no matter how much I slept, I never felt rested.

❌ Digestive issues—bloating, discomfort, irregular bowel movements.

❌ Extreme PMS and mood swings—I felt emotionally unstable and anxious.

❌ Irregular cycles—sometimes they were long, sometimes they were short, but they were never truly predictable.

❌ Hair loss and brittle nails—classic signs of nutritional deficiencies.

I vividly remember standing in my kitchen, cooking soy-based meals, believing I was doing my body a favor. But despite my dedication, my symptoms were only getting worse. And then came the breaking point—I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism.

Why was my plant-based diet failing me? Looking back, the answer was clear: I wasn’t getting the bioavailable nutrients my body needed to function.

🔹 Plant proteins are poorly absorbed – While plant proteins can provide amino acids, they are only 30-70% bioavailable, compared to 90-100% for animal proteins.

🔹 Excess fiber was working against me – I was overloading on fiber, thinking it was great for gut health, but in reality, it was interfering with nutrient absorption and further stressing my digestion.

🔹 I was missing key vitamins and minerals – Many essential nutrients for hormone production (like vitamin A, B12, iron, and zinc) are much harder to obtain from plant sources, especially for women with hormonal imbalances.

🔹 Healthy fats are essential for hormone production – I had cut out so many vital fats, not realizing that cholesterol is a building block for estrogen and progesterone.

The first small shift I made was adding eggs back into my diet. At first, it was difficult—mentally, I had convinced myself that animal products were unnecessary. But the impact on my energy and mood was undeniable.

Then came the next step: reintroducing dairy and, eventually, meat. The change was life-changing:

✔ My cycles became more regular.

✔ My energy levels improved dramatically—I no longer needed multiple cups of coffee just to function.

✔ My mood stabilized, and my PMS symptoms decreased significantly.

✔ My hair and nails became stronger, showing clear signs of improved nutrition.

What I learned:

Food is medicine—but only if you are eating what truly nourishes YOUR body. Following a trend or a theory is not the same as listening to your body’s actual needs. My experience, combined with working with hundreds of women, has shown me that animal-based foods can be a game-changer for hormone health.

If you’re feeling depleted, exhausted, and disconnected from your body, I encourage you to question what you’ve been told about food. The key is not restriction—it’s deep nourishment.

2. Letting Go of Restriction & the Fear of Food

For years, I lived in constant food fear—calories, macros, portion sizes. Every meal felt like a calculation rather than nourishment.

I used to believe:

❌ “Eating less is better.”

❌ “Low-fat is the healthiest choice.”

❌ “Carbs are the enemy.”

❌ “Smaller portions = more control.”

I was always trying to minimize—less food, fewer calories, fewer carbs, fewer fats. Everywhere I looked, diet culture was reinforcing the message: Eat less. Weigh less. Be less.

But here’s the truth: Your body doesn’t thrive on restriction—it thrives on nourishment.

The shift happened when I stopped asking “What should I cut out?” and started asking “What can I add to truly nourish my body?”

🔹 I stopped counting calories and instead focused on nutrient density.

🔹 I stopped fearing carbs and instead prioritized whole, unprocessed sources that fueled my body.

🔹 I stopped depriving myself and started trusting my hunger cues.

When I let go of food guilt and embraced true nourishment, everything changed.

3. Releasing the Need for Control & Trusting the Process

For most of my life, I lived in a state of control—micromanaging my health, my routines, my future. I believed that if I just figured everything out, did more research, and followed the “right” plan, I could fix myself. I had long lists of shoulds and musts, constantly telling myself:

❌ “I must track everything.”

❌ “I have to do more to heal.”

❌ “If I stop controlling, everything will fall apart.”

But my biggest breakthrough came when I realized: I don’t have to control everything.

At first, this was terrifying. But as I let go of control and leaned into trust, something shifted.

🔹 I stopped trying to “fix” myself and started trusting that my body knew what it was doing.

🔹 I accepted that I don’t need to have all the answers—and that’s okay.

🔹 I realized my influence has limits—I can control what I nourish my body with, but I can’t force outcomes.

One of the biggest turning points for me was exploring spirituality—not in the religious sense, but as a practice of self-trust, surrender, and connection to something bigger than myself.

This shift was deeply supported by:

Working with a coach—someone who helped me see how much of my stress came from overthinking and over-controlling.

Women’s circles & community—being in spaces where feminine energy is nurtured, where I was reminded that I didn’t have to do it all alone.

Learning to be okay with the unknown—understanding that I don’t need to predict and control everything for things to work out.

When I look back, I see how much of my hormonal imbalance was tied to a constant state of stress, pressure, and rigidity. So many women struggling with hormones live in this same state—feeling like they must know everything, do everything, and be everything.

But you don’t have to.

The moment I let go of the belief that I had to control everything, it felt like cutting the invisible strings that had been pulling me in a million directions. The stress, the anxiety, the constant mental weight—it all started to ease.

✨ Instead of gripping tightly, I allowed myself to surrender.

✨ Instead of constantly seeking more knowledge, I trusted my body’s wisdom.

✨ Instead of fighting against my natural rhythms, I embraced them.

And that’s when the real healing happened.

4. Learning to Trust My Body & Embracing My Cyclical Nature

For the longest time, I operated as if my body was something I had to override, push through, and control. If I was tired, I forced myself to keep going. If I had a deep inner resistance to doing something, I ignored it and did it anyway. I believed that success—whether in health, work, or life—meant pushing harder, doing more, and always being productive.

The biggest shift? Realizing that I don’t have to fight against my body—I can listen to it.

It sounds simple, but for me, it was revolutionary.

🔹 If I’m tired, it means my body needs rest—not more caffeine.

🔹 If I feel resistance toward something, maybe it’s not aligned with me.

🔹 If my body craves stillness, I don’t have to force myself into action.

I had this huge realization:

My body’s signals are not obstacles to overcome—they are guidance to follow.

At first, I doubted myself. Could I really trust my body? Would it be “enough” if I simply honored what I needed, instead of constantly controlling everything?

The answer was a resounding YES.

And when I finally allowed myself to trust my body, something incredible happened:

I felt lighter.

I felt calmer.

I felt more in sync with myself than ever before.

This process of letting go and trusting myself led me to discover something even deeper—my cyclical nature.

For so long, I had expected myself to function the same way every single day—to have the same energy, the same productivity, the same motivation. But women aren’t designed that way. We are cyclical beings.

Realizing that my needs change throughout my cycle was life-changing.

🔹 In the first half of my cycle, I have more energy, clarity, and drive—I schedule more demanding tasks and creative projects during this time.

🔹 Before my period, I know I need more rest, nourishment, and gentleness—so I allow myself to slow down.

🔹 I stopped forcing myself to fit into a linear model of productivity and embraced my natural flow.

And you know what? Everything started working better. My hormones, my energy, my mental clarity—it all began to align.

When you follow your body’s rhythms instead of fighting them, you create an environment where balance and healing happen naturally.

5. Supplementing Based on My Own Needs (Not Just Symptoms)

At first, I approached supplementation by focusing on specific symptoms—thinking, What should I take for PMS? What helps with fatigue? But I quickly realized that this approach wasn’t enough.

💡 The real breakthrough came when I stopped chasing symptoms and started understanding my body as a whole.

Instead of rigidly focusing on diagnoses, I began asking myself: What does my body actually lack?

For me, the missing puzzle pieces were deep nutrient deficiencies, worsened by a restrictive diet and years of hormonal birth control. When I shifted my focus to testing my levels and supplementing based on real needs, everything changed.

✔ My energy improved.

✔ My hormonal symptoms became manageable.

✔ My body finally felt nourished, rather than constantly depleted.

The key lesson? Don’t guess—assess. Supporting your body isn’t about blindly adding supplements; it’s about understanding what your body truly needs to thrive.

6. Giving My Body Time to Heal

Healing takes time. We live in a world where everything is rushed, but your hormones don’t work like that.

The biggest lesson I learned? Patience is key.

✔ Your body didn’t get out of balance overnight, and it won’t heal overnight either.

✔ Expect gradual improvements—not instant results.

✔ Trust that consistency and care will bring long-term transformation.

When I stopped expecting quick fixes and started focusing on long-term habits, I saw sustainable results.
